Energy Efficiency at School

Türkiye has approximately 1.2 million teachers, 18 million students and millions of parents. The education sector therefore directly reaches a significant share of the country’s population. Given this scale, why not make efficient energy use, energy saving and sustainability part of school life?

The efficient use of energy resources in schools is important both for ensuring the effective use of public resources and for encouraging students to adopt sustainable lifestyle habits.

Printers, photocopiers, televisions, sound systems and other office equipment used in schools should be switched off when not in use. As these devices continue to consume a certain amount of energy even in standby mode, particularly when they are not used overnight, devices that can be safely unplugged should be disconnected from the socket, or their power strips should be switched off after lessons have ended.

Any work on electrical panels or fuse boxes should be carried out only by authorised personnel, taking the school’s safety systems into account.

When purchasing electrical appliances for schools, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers, products with high energy efficiency should be prioritised.

School management should also ensure that heating boilers are maintained regularly, inefficient boilers are replaced, and the insulation of the walls, windows and roofs of school buildings is improved.
